Sally and Peter’s Arrivo 2008 Nebbiolo has just taken out the trophy for theBest Alternative Red at the Adelaide Hills Regional Wine Show. A great result, and thouroughly deserved.

On the topic of Arrivo here is a quick run down of recent press for the 2008 Nebbiolo and the 2007 Lunga Macerazione.

The Deal, The Australian Business Magazine November 16th, 2012 The Best Case Scenario by Max Allen 2007 Arrivo Nebbiolo Lunga Macerazione

The result of years of painstaking and passionate research and winemaking experimentation by wine scientist Peter Godden and wine importer Sally McGill, this is one of the best samples of the new wave of Italian varieties being planted in Australian vineyards.

Nebbiolo – originally from Italy’s northwest, where it’s responsible for the famous red wines of Barolo and Barbaresco – it is notoriously difficult to grow and make well. It often produces wines that can be deceptively light in colour – almost a rusty orange – but that pack a huge punch of tongue-hugging tannin, leaving the drinker crying out for the ameliorating effects of cured pork products. By macerating the skins of the Nebbiolo for more than two months in their newly fermented wine, Godden and McGill have tamed those tannins. This wine is tannic, yes, but it flows like satin through the mouth, draping your taste buds with a deep sense of savoury satisfaction.

Arrivo 2008 Nebbiolo

I was just rushing out of a wine tasting, en route to another wine tasting, when fellow scribe Max Allen suggested I hold my horses and check out the Arrivo nebbiolos. Max, as usual, was right on the money. Wine scientist Peter Godden and his partner Sally McGill handcraft tiny quantities of stylish wines in the Adelaide Hills, paying tribute to the great wines of Piedmont. Even though this beautifully savoury and structured wine is four years old, it will ideally be consumed in 15-20 years down the track. It is a wine with impressive architecture, a vinous cathedral with many elements to admire. I loved its brambly intensity and length, tannin structure and its peacock’s tail of intense dark fruit and earthy, mushroomy flavours.

GOOD WINE GUIDE 2013, Nick Stock

Arrivo Nebbiolo Lunga Macerazione 2007, 95 points

The name here refers to the lengthy maceration on skins, adding deep-set complexity but also building smooth, almost paste-like density and harmonious tannin texture. The nose smells of fresh-picked rose petals, sweet red cherry and Angelina plum and fruit-steeped herbs. The palate has a brooding style, with supple yet dense tannins that stretch wide and deep, carrying plum and dark chocolate flavours long and true. Plenty of cellaring potential here, and it is maturing on the right path.

Arrivo Nebbiolo 2008, 94 points

The 2008 Arrivo has a bright and lively thread of redcurrant, red cherry and licorice root on the nose, distinctive nebbiolo aromas too; already complex. The palate is full of juicy fruit appeal, really lithe and assertive, full of energy and drive, elegant and balanced. Terrific wine.

Arrivo 2008 Nebbiolo, Adelaide Hills.

Arrivo is the brainchild of Peter Godden and Sally McGill with their minute vineyard planted exclusively with Nebbiolo. There are beautiful floral perfumes of red roses, black cherry, fresh clove and spicy citrus peel. The palate is tight and bright, it’s fine, chalky tannins carrying the finish to a gentle, harmonious conclusion.
